Thermal imaging is a powerful tool in the fire service, yet it often comes with limited or no formal education. In many cases, instruction is confined to sales demonstrations that focus on how to turn the camera on, change the batteries, or adjust basic settings. If a firefighter were handed a Halligan tool with no training and told to use it, they would understandably be uncomfortable. We would never accept that standard for forcible entry tools, so why do we accept it for thermal imaging cameras?
This class addresses that gap by providing a deeper, practical understanding of thermal imaging and its relationship to fire behavior. Through the use of videos and images, concepts will be presented clearly and in a way that directly applies to real-world operations. Participants will learn what a thermal imaging camera can and cannot do, including both equipment limitations and user limitations. The course will cover how thermal imaging works, the different types of emitters and why understanding them matters, the components of a TIC and how to use them to your advantage, and how to properly interpret what you are seeing on the screen. Practical applications on the fireground and during other emergency incidents will be emphasized to ensure firefighters leave confident and capable of using this tool safely and effectively.
