Colonel Thomas J. Gordon, USMC (Retired)

Colonel Gordon assumed the role of Commandant of Cadets at The Citadel in 2021 following his retirement from the U.S. Marine Corps after 30 years of active service. A combat veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan, he commanded at every level within the operating forces and held key operational staff assignments throughout his career. His senior leadership roles include Director of the Marine Corps Command & Staff College and Military Secretary to the 37th Commandant of the Marine Corps, as well as serving as a Resident Fellow with the Council on Foreign Relations.

He holds a master’s degree from Webster University, is a graduate of the Joint Forces Staff College, and completed senior-level education at MIT as a Commandant’s Fellow. In 2026, he became President of the Association of Military Colleges & Schools (AMCSUS) and is the author of the best-selling book Marine Maxims: Turning Principles into Practice.
